Health Informatics
The researchers from the Vision Research Laboratory at the University of California Santa Barbara, in Collaboration with Dr. Jeffrey C. Fried from the Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital are combining computational abilities with healthcare practices and expertise to evaluate and improve patient care. Their collaborative efforts seek to develop technologies to evaluate existing healthcare therapies and to provide the clinical evidence necessary to devise new therapies. The challenges of the collaborative work include maintaining patient and staff privacy, designing non-intrusive and non-disruptive systems and algorithms, and working with existing hospital infrastructure and standards of care. The initial efforts focus on the analysis of patient poses that can be attributed to sleep hygiene (quality of sleep), decubitus ulcerations (bed sores), and work flows (visits, sanitation, and care).
